Do we ever look at what we think about?
I was doing some meditation and thought about how intrusive it is, to my mind, when I think about things that don't really matter much.
So before we even think, maybe its possible to ask oneself, "Does it really matter?" and to stop mind clutter before it takes root.
Even turning on my PC, I find mind clutter in the form of things I left in open windows on my browser, or too much junk email, messages that are not important, and so on. I think I will try to be more minimalistic in my dealings with the web. I enjoy a lot just looking at the stillness of nature. Even in the central city, I find ways to turn the average and sometimes drab scenery into a calm mental state - it just takes focus.
Being able to drown out the hustle and bustle takes a lot of mental muscle: Some choose to just move away from cities. But I think it's also somewhat of a "survival skill" being able to survive in the city without being consumed by consumerism, or the workings of a city. We have a small key to our own peace of mind, and can choose what we focus on and concentrate on what is important.
